April CPI Breakdown: Inflation Moderates Slightly, But Concerns Remain


 Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPIAUCNS) for April 2024:

    • Shelter: This category, which includes housing costs, saw a significant increase in April, contributing heavily to the overall rise.
    • Gasoline: Gasoline prices also rose in April, further impacting consumer spending.
    • Food: The food index remained flat overall, but there were some internal variations. Food at home prices decreased slightly, while food away from home prices rose modestly.
    • Other Categories: Indexes for various categories like medical care, apparel, and personal care also showed increases.
    • Decreases: Some categories, including used cars and trucks, household furnishings, and new vehicles, saw price decreases in April.
  • Comparison to Previous Months: While the overall increase in April was slightly lower than in previous months, it's important to note that inflation is still a concern. The Federal Reserve is closely monitoring these figures and may take steps to address inflation if it continues to rise significantly.
